Elena Thomas | Artist | Studio Visits and Documenting Arts Council EnglandProjects
I LOVE working with the amazing lady and artist. I have documented Arts Council Funded projects with her and as part of this created short documentary video pieces as well as portraits, documented exhibition openings and created contents to show her work, processes and her general all round greatness.
We have a shared love for collaboration and discussing ideas over cups of tea with a biscuit before cracking on and generally just both getting on with our own thing and she trusts me to document her in a genuine, uncringe and authentic way.
Here is a bit about what she thinks of me
“I have worked with Laura Rhodes for many years on a variety of creative activities.
Most notable of these was my ACE funded project “Nine Women” in 2015, for
which Laura documented the entire project, with photographs and videos of work,
events and interviews. It was her approach to portraiture that I was particularly
impressed with. The images emerged from long conversations about my practice,
work and life experiences. Consequently they felt contextualised, and showed a
great deal of personality (Laura’s and mine). They showed a kind, benign reality,
not a false glamour. Laura has a way of using natural light and a sense of place
that imbues her subjects with a feeling of being valued for who they are at the
moment, without negative comparisons or judgements.
It is because of that work that I have recently commissioned Laura to document
my current project “Drawing Songs” (Also ACE funded).
Laura’s input is invaluable and her view of the work always adds value. As an
artist herself, she is able to communicate her perspective in a way that aids my
own train of thought.”
